i recently visited quebec this april, and i found it might be good to report on this;
over the past two years, manga has exploded in french culture. titles such as DN Angel,
Naruto, Card Captor Sakura, Fushigi Yuugi, and Kill me Kiss me have already been published -- some even
before their english releases. A unique thing about the french released manga is they are almost identical to
the original japanese versions, with inserts, and the exact dust covers.
in october of 2002, while visiting quebec, i first discovered that manga was being published in french, and bought
volume two of card captor sakura [sakura la chasseuse de cartes]. Although this was before they started to
not "flip" the pages, i found this manga to be soon my favorite. it even had a clow card of tomoyo loosely inserted
into the book. not like the english ones where they were to be ripped from the pages.
small french manga companies, which are located in france, ship these manga to quebec where they can be
bought for 10-13 canadian dollars. this benifits canadian manga collectors because of the price issue.
manga being bought in the US, which is the main place to buy english manga, usually costs 10+ US dollars, which
makes it pricy for canadians. it's also the availability issue, manga is usually hard to find in canada. the only places where
it's plentiful is sometimes in big cities and anime stores, which are usually only located in big cities.
although these manga can only be bought in quebec, or france, they are not hard to find there. almost, if not every bookstore
i visited had a huge selection for these manga.
taina and myself have started collecting these manga, even more than the english versions. i highly recommend that
if you are visiting quebec or france to check a local book store, you'll be quite surprised of the selection.
